Hitchhikers Guide to Servas Past

I recently visited with one of our new Nebraska members and she told me an interesting story about hitchhiking in Ireland in 1980. I know that Renee Riley also did some hitchhiking in the 1970s, as did I in 1979. I wonder how many other Servas people hitched as well. I think we need to chronicle these stories while we still can.

The Blue Highways were for Servas travelers, especially back in the day when it was possible to hitchhike almost anywhere in the world. If you hitchhiked in the 60s-80s while traveling, whether or not you were a Servas member, we want to hear from you. Even if you did not personally hitch, perhaps you know someone who did that you can tell us about. Please send any ideas, stories, pictures, etc. to JoanneFerguson.Cavanaugh@usservas.org.

of course we hitchhike how else stood a poor kid get around? I can’t remember any exciting stories that would be newsworthy because it was just second nature during the 60s and 70s. Of course my daughters ask about this as if it were so risky. Since Ilived in Washington state in 1979, my daughter asked if I ever ran into Ted Bundy, a serial killer!. What a horrible question! Of course, it never occurred to us at the time that it was risky business!

In 1986 I was in Japan. I needed to get from Mount Fuji to Kyoto and then Kyoto to Chiba. Someone said that the Japanese like to pick up hitchhikers. That is so they could practice conversational English. I remember that each time I stuck by thumb out it took less that 3 minutes to get a ride. One fellow had a limo. It seemed each one went out of their way before they dropped me off. I met some wonderful people.
