Want to Travel, But Not Sure Where to Go?

Unless you’re set with a bucket list, have a travel agent, and/or a New York Times subscription, you might need to go to the library for this. For more than twenty years the NYT’s travel section has regularly published pieces on how to spend thirty-six hours from Bend to Bordeaux, Kochi to Buenos Aires and points in between. If you want a more personal view, go to https://www.window-swap.com which shows a day’s view from people’s windows all over the world. It was a breath of fresh air during the pandemic lockdown, but it will also let you explore places from the perspective of neighborhoods.

If cities are your thing, and you need additional inspiration, every year in addition to best restaurants, best hotels and similar lists, Condé Nast publishes its survey of the world’s most livable cities.

Everywhere is interesting, if you haven't been there. More and more, I want to go to places that aren't on anyone's "bucket list." I love the "Skyscanner" web site, which can find cheap flights (if you know where you want to go), but they also have a feature "everywhere" and you can see where it's cheap to fly on the day you want to go. That's how I got to Morocco from Dublin several years ago (for around $30). I spent several weeks bouncing around, staying with a couple of SERVAS hosts (I was their first traveler), then wending my way up through southern Spain... spending New Year's eve with a wonderful family who rented a casita in their back yard-- the dad was a flamenco guitar player-- so many unplanned adventures...
