Visiting Washington DC
Washington DC is famous, beautiful and fun. The area has some of the largest museums in the world, most of which are free, and many famous national monuments and buildings (the White House and Capitol being two). We are also a city of neighborhoods, parks, local restaurants, clubs, theaters, foreign embassies and much, much more. Servas members love to host and tour visitors in this famous area.
Some of Maryland and Northern Virginia are considered within Greater Washington DC even though they are different states not part of the District of Washington. The public transportation system conveniently serves all three areas. Your Servas hosts can assist you with logistics in easily getting around.
Travel to Washington is easy by plane, train or bus. Travel within the city by bus, the Metro subway system or by walking is convenient and enjoyable. Most of our suburban areas are connected with the city by public transportation.
Reagan National Airport (DCA) is on the Washington DC Metro subway system. Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Baltimore Washington International Airport (BWI) also serve the area. They require taxi or airport transportation service to get to the city.
Many bus services travel between Washington DC, NY City, Philadelphia, other US cities and even those in Canada. These provide inexpensive ways to travel to D.C. Bolt and Megabus are just two of the many choices.
Here are a just a few useful websites for travelers. Hosts can provide you with many other links. Karl Wolf, one of the area coordinators, has an extensive list of area suggestions and the list is yours for the asking.
