Servas Experiences
What’s it like to be a Servas host or traveler? Here are some snippets from our members:
"Servas seems like one large family and one incident that shows this sticks in my mind. Shortly after becoming a traveler, I stayed with a wonderful family who lived on the outskirts of Vienna. Five years later, I was staying with a delightful woman in Ireland who described her most recent guests. Incredibly, it was this same family. Similar meetings have happened since then, and it always reinforces my feeling of family." - (DC traveler)
"On this trip, I made it my mission to visit hosts who didn't receive many travelers. I called a woman who lived north of Darwin (Australia) and asked if next week would be convenient. She grew quiet and then exclaimed 'why me?!' I said that she sounded like an interesting person -- indeed she was 70 years old and had worked as a professional cake decorator. She told me that she'd never met an American before. She got to relive many wonderful memories and I got to know a delightful woman and learn about the Darwin of years ago."

"When my son heard that I had three Danish girls staying with me for the week-end he and his friends were over in a flash. As I went to my room that night I saw the car driving off with everyone inside; I don’t when they got back home. The boys came back the next night, but unfortunately my travelers had already headed to Philadelphia."

"I am really grateful that I had such a nice week-end with you. Honestly I had my best conversation in the US so far!"
- (Hungarian traveler)
"Like you said, life isn’t only about monuments and museums, but about getting to know different people and their culture and that is why we really appreciate you showing us how your family lives." - (Estonian travelers)
"Ferenc showed up the morning of a funeral at my church for a very respected member, so I took him along. He visited with me two more times while he was studying in the US, and this year I am invited to his wedding in Budapest."
