Report from Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development

By Sharon L. Wallenberg, Main US Servas UN Rep

In Johannesburg the focus was on implementation of sustainable development which builds on the efforts at Rio and in the years since. A comprehensive implementation plan was agreed on. The Plan reflects the best thinking on how to create a healthier, more secure, and prosperous world. The Johannesburg Plan of Implementation (JPOI) will move the international community forward in key sectors such as water, sanitation, energy, chemicals, fisheries, agriculture, and health. This plan also reaffirms the principles that sound economic management, good governance at all levels, investment in people, and responsible stewardship of our environment are crucial for sustainable development.

While the words in that plan are good, actions are better. Perhaps the most important message from Johannseburg was that sustainable development depends not just on the UN or governmental promises, but also on the actions of all stakeholders. Grass roots efforts based on well conceived strategies, undertaken in partnerships are the best was to make lasting progress on sustainable development.

United States Servas is one of the players in this global concept on sustainable development. We will make our contribution to this goal in the areas of Responsible and Sustainable Tourism. Our Newsletters are full of ideas and ways in which our members can become part of the implementation of the Johannesburg concept of sustainable development.

United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) is a driving force behind the global committment reached at Johannesburg. According to UNEP, partnerships are key to realistically pursuing sustainable development. A comprehensive and coherent international approach to the implementation of sustainable development has to include the involvement and partnerships both with the different sectors of government as well as between governments and major groups. UNEP has a long standing experience with the private sector, particularly through sectoral initiatives, industry-specific voluntary initiatives and codes of conduct. UNEP has renewed its efforts to engage civil society at large, and youth in particular, in their work and new strategies will be developed.

United States Servas is a partner with UNEP in accomplishing the Johannesburg goals by carrying the UNEP messages on Ecotourism in the US Servas Newsletter.
