UN Reports |Autumn 2002 IIIThe Ribbon International UN September 11th Peace InitiativeBy Sharon L. Wallenberg, Main US Servas UN Rep On September 11, 2002 many United Nations Non Governmental Representatives participated in the annual UN Department of Public Information Conference attended the UN Interfaith Service at St. Bartholomew’s Church. United States Servas Reps were invited to participate and display Ribbons at the ceremony. Some UN NGO Reps attending the service then carried the Ribbon panels to the UN Dag Hammarskjold Plaza Park. Ribbon panels were joined together with a moment of silent mediation/prayer and the Interfaith Litany was read for peace. Participants then proceeded by subway and walked with the Ribbons to the World Trade Center Memorial. Again the Ribbons were joined together in a moment of silent meditation/prayer and the Interfaith Litany was read for peace. People throughout the city showed an interest in the Ribbon project. Many wanted to share their wish for peace and love by doing something positive. Creating/joining Ribbons (cloth panels with peoples’ hand crafted representations/pictures of peace on them) is a way of finding common ground with others for peace world-wide. United States Servas members are invited to create a “Ribbon” which will become part of the UNESCO Millennium exhibit. For more information go to: http://www.peacecoalition.org/projects/ribbon/.
